At The Swedish Burn Care Foundation we work to, in various ways, support and improve the treatment of burns and severe wounds in Africa.
Building, equipping and training burn clinics in Africa
The Swedish Burn Care Foundation is a non-profit organization that conducts activities to support and improve the treatment of victims of burns and severe wounds in Africa. We build, equip and train burn care clinics at existing healthcare facilities. When everything is in place, the operations are handed over to the existing healthcare facility, which takes over operations.
Building
In order to be able to provide modern burn care, appropriate premises and equipment are needed. We support this by financing the renovation of existing premises and adapting them for the purpose of effective wound care. We have done this at the University Hospital in Arba Minch in southern Ethiopia. The site was completed in April 2020. The next construction project is in the city of Bule Hora in southern Ethiopia. There, we have been allocated land adjacent to the city's university hospital and construction is planned to start in 2021.
Equipping
In collaboration with organizations such as the Salvation Army, we also help to equip the wards with used but modern medical equipment. The equipment is collected by Salvation Army Aid from various hospitals in Sweden. The Swedish Burn Care Foundation then finances the actual container shipment to Africa. The first shipment arrived in Ethiopia in November 2020 and another container left Sweden in March 2021. The plan is to carry out three to four similar shipments per year.
Educating
We support training initiatives and the exchange of experience between healthcare staff at the various hospitals in Ethiopia and at the Burn Care Center at the Uppsala University Hospital. We also support targeted training efforts in burn care in Ethiopia, in close collaboration with organizations such as CBWCF and Interburns, and burn prevention work in collaboration with AMREF.
